Yearly BackCountry Skills Classes

Look, I've been guiding folks through the backcountry for over two decades, and there's one thing I know for sure – the outdoors will humble you real quick if you're not prepared. That's why I started these yearly classes with Ananya Fishing. This isn't your typical weekend workshop where you sit around and talk theory. This is hands-on, get-your-boots-dirty training that'll turn you from a weekend warrior into someone who actually knows what they're doing out there. We keep it intimate – just you and me – so you get the full attention you deserve and can ask all those questions you've been wondering about.

What to Expect on the Water

These yearly classes are designed for the serious outdoors enthusiast who wants to level up their game. We're talking about a full year's worth of skills-building sessions that cover everything from reading water conditions and weather patterns to advanced navigation techniques that could save your bacon when the GPS decides to quit on you. Each session builds on the last, so by the end of the year, you'll have a toolkit that most guides would be jealous of. We meet up regularly throughout the seasons – spring snowmelt, summer heat, fall transitions, and winter conditions – because Mother Nature teaches different lessons depending on when you're out there. The beauty of this setup is that you're not just learning techniques; you're developing instincts that come from repeated exposure to real conditions.

Skills & Techniques

Here's where the rubber meets the road. We start with the fundamentals most people think they know but really don't – proper knot tying that won't fail when it matters, reading topographic maps like they're your favorite book, and understanding how weather systems actually work instead of just checking an app. Then we dive into the advanced stuff that separates the rookies from the pros. You'll learn to read water like a story – where fish are likely to be holding based on current, structure, and seasonal patterns. We cover emergency procedures that go way beyond basic first aid, including self-rescue techniques and how to signal for help when you're miles from anywhere. Navigation gets serious attention too – not just GPS basics, but old-school compass and map work that'll get you home when technology fails. Each month brings new challenges based on what the season throws at us.

Species You'll Learn to Target

While the classes focus on overall backcountry skills, we spend considerable time on understanding local fish behavior because reading the water is a skill that transfers to everything else you do outdoors. Throughout the year, you'll learn how different species respond to seasonal changes, water temperature fluctuations, and feeding patterns that shift with the calendar. Spring brings aggressive post-spawn fish that are hungry and relatively easy to locate if you know what to look for. Summer means deeper water strategies and understanding thermal layers that most anglers never even think about. Fall fishing requires patience and precision as fish prepare for winter, becoming more selective about what they'll hit. Winter techniques are all about slowing down and understanding how cold water changes everything from lure presentation to fish metabolism. The real value isn't just catching fish – it's developing the observation skills that make you better at reading any natural environment.

Time to Book Your Spot

This yearly program isn't for everyone, and that's intentional. If you're looking for a quick fix or expecting to become an expert overnight, you're barking up the wrong tree. But if you're ready to put in the work and want to learn from someone who's made every mistake in the book so you don't have to, then we should talk. The one-on-one format means you get personalized instruction based on your current skill level and goals. Maybe you're already solid on basic techniques but want to understand advanced weather reading, or perhaps you're starting from scratch and need the full foundation. Either way, we'll tailor the curriculum to fit what you need to know. Space is limited by design – I only take on a few students each year because quality instruction takes time and attention. By the end of our year together, you'll have confidence in conditions that used to make you nervous, skills that'll keep you safe when things go sideways, and knowledge that'll make every trip more successful. Don't wait until next season to get started – the best time to begin building these skills is right now.
